Saab is revolutionizing the firepower of Sisu GTP armored vehicles with the integration of the Trackfire ARES combat module, equipped with a 30 mm automatic cannon.
Finland has taken a bold step to increase the lethality of its light armored vehicles by proposing the installation of combat modules capable of engaging both ground targets and aerial threats such as drones. Swedish defense company Saab led the integration of the new system, taking the Sisu GTP to a new technological level.

The highlight of the project is the Trackfire ARES module, which incorporates a 30×113 mm M230LF Bushmaster automatic cannon and a 7.62 mm FN MAG coaxial machine gun. Weighing just 350 kg, the module can be mounted on top of relatively light armored vehicles without compromising mobility. Its dual-axis stabilization allows for accurate fire even while on the move.
The main weapon can fire both conventional high-explosive fragmentation rounds and specialized munitions, such as the American XM1211 programmable ammunition, which enables electronic control over detonation timing. This makes it possible to create controlled shrapnel clouds, highly effective against drones and infantry hidden behind cover.
According to Saab, the system sets a new standard in the field of remote weapon stations, combining versatility, lethality, and anti-air capability in a compact format. With optical precision and rapid targeting, Trackfire ARES offers an effective response to modern threats.
However, analysts point out some controversial aspects of the design. The exposed structure of certain components—intended to reduce weight and simplify maintenance—could compromise the system’s resilience in combat scenarios. Similar solutions, such as those from Spain’s EM&E, proved unreliable during the war in Ukraine.
Ukrainian armored vehicles are evolving too
Ukraine has also been investing in more powerful armored vehicles. The Varta 2, developed by Ukrainian Armored Vehicles, was unveiled in 2024 with the domestically designed “Sich” combat module, which includes a 30 mm cannon, automatic grenade launcher, and coaxial machine gun. However, Ukraine’s ZTM-1 cannon does not support programmable ammunition, limiting its use to ground targets.
In terms of protection, the Varta 2 features reinforced armor for direct engagement, while the Finnish Sisu GTP offers only Level 1 protection under the STANAG 4569 standard, prioritizing mobility and lightweight design.
