Russia will not be able to prevent future adhesion of Moldova, says EU

by Marcelo Moreira

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Friday that Russia will not be able to prevent the future adhesion of Moldova to the European Union (EU).

“The European future of Moldova cannot and will not be hostage to Russia’s actions,” German politics told Chisinau a news conference after the first Moldadia-Ue summit.

Von der Leyen denounced Russia’s daily attacks on the former Soviet public, located between Ukraine and Romania, with cyber attacks and misinformation.

“This will never succeed,” he said, referring to Kremlin’s attempts to destabilize the country’s political situation.

She emphasized that “Moldova is ready to open (negotiations on) the main chapters.”

Von der Leyen, who praised Moldova’s recent progress regarding reforms, has ensured that Brussels is also ready to start negotiations on the “remaining” “thematic” groups as soon as possible. “

Addressing the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, she assured that the EU would defend the freedom, democracy and the security of Moldova.

Moreover, he emphasized that EU and Moldova would show “the power of democracy” to what he called “agents of autocracy.”

“No more blackmail,” he said, noting that Brussels connected the national energy network to the European, which eliminated Russian pressures on gas prices.
