Russia adopts a pessimistic tone before negotiations for ceasefire with Ukraine: ‘Do not expect miracle’ authorities from Russia and Ukraine are expected to meet on Wednesday in Turkey for a new round of negotiations. This will be the fourth meeting between representatives of both countries in the last three months. Previous meetings resulted in prisoners’ exchange and the return of dead soldiers. However, there was no advance towards a ceasefire. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said on Monday (21) that the peace proposals presented by Russia and Ukraine are, for now, “totally opposite” and that there is still “a lot of work” to be done to reach an understanding. Already on Tuesday (22), Peskov stated that there is no reason to expect “miracles” of the meeting and that it is “practically impossible” a solution to war in the current context. Russia wants Ukraine to give four occupied territories, besides Crimea, and give up entering the organization of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO). Kiev considers these requirements unacceptable. On the other hand, the Ukrainian government requires the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from its territory and Western safety guarantees – such as continuous sending of weapons and the presence of European forces. These terms are rejected by Moscow. Despite this, Russia said earlier this month that it is still willing to negotiate. The statement came after US President Donald Trump gave a period of 50 days for the Russians to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine.
