United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday he was “unhappy” for not having “any progress” in the peace negotiations about Ukraine during the telephone conversation he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“We had a telephone conversation. It was quite long and talked about many topics, including Iran. We also talked about the war in Ukraine and I’m not happy with it, I am not,” Trump told the press before boarding the presidential Air Force One to the state of Iowa.
When the journalists insisted, he added, “No, we made no progress with them.”
According to the report released by Kremlin, Trump asked Putin to end hostilities in Ukraine, but the Russian President replied that he will not give up his goals.
The conversation, which lasted almost an hour, occurred shortly after Washington decided to suspend some arms shipments to Ukraine after a review of his military spending.
Russia dictator Vladimir Putin, in turn, said he will not retreat on his goals in Ukraine, despite the American’s calls for the end of the extensive war in Eastern Europe. “Russia will not deviate from its goals,” said international policy advisor Yuri Ushakov, at a news conference.
Ushakov pointed out that Putin explained to Trump that Moscow will continue his efforts to eliminate the “original causes” of the conflict with Ukraine, which led to the current confrontation that has lasted three years. The dictator argues that he was “obliged” to declare war in Ukraine to prevent the country’s entry into NATO, the Atlantic Military Alliance.
