New Social Tariff of Electricity comes into force this Saturday

by Marcelo Moreira

The social tariff of electricity, which guarantees discount and even gratuity in the electricity bill for low -income families, came into force on Saturday (5). With the measure, people registered in the Single Registry who consume up to 80 kWh per month will have full exemption from the electricity bill.

According to the federal government, about 60 million Brazilians should benefit from the new social tariff model, which can generate an annual cost of over R $ 3.6 billion. The financial impact will be compensated for changes in the market and adjustments in the electricity sector.

Who is entitled to the social tariff of electricity?

The discount on the electricity bill will be automatic for families that meet the Cadastro Único (Cadúnico) criteria. See who is entitled:

  • Families with monthly income per person up to half a minimum wage and registered in CadÚnico;
  • Elderly from 65 years and people with disabilities who receive the continued benefit (BPC);
  • Families with income of up to three minimum wages, with some member who uses electrical equipment essential to health;
  • Registered indigenous and quilombola peoples, with monthly consumption of up to 80 kWh.

How the free electricity bill works

From the rules, those who consume up to 80 kWh per month will not pay for the electricity used. If consumption exceeds this limit, the charge is again applied proportionally. Some rates and taxes, such as ICMS and the contribution to public lighting, may continue to appear in the account, according to local legislation.

The social tariff also covers consumers with three -phase facilities. In this case, for those who exceed 80 kWh, there is a minimum charge provided for by the distributor to maintain the power grid.

Provisional measure still needs approval

Provisional measure 1300/2025, which created the new social tariff, was published in May. Now, the National Congress has up to 120 days to approve the text and make it definitive. Otherwise, gratuity may lose the validity.
