Netanyahu announces Trump’s nomination for the Peace Nobel

by Marcelo Moreira

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday that he appointed US President Donald Trump on the Nobel Peace Prize.

Netanyahu handed Trump the letter of nomination during a dinner at the White House, in which both discussed the American proposal of a 60-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The prime minister praised Trump’s efforts to promote peace “in many countries, but especially in the Middle East.”

“It’s well deserved and you should get it,” Netanyahu said in reference to Nobel.

The announcement took Trump by surprise, who thanked the gesture saying, “Coming from you, it’s very significant.”

Trump had already received two other nominations for the 2025 Peace Nobel Prize: First by the Pakistan government on June 21, in recognition of the truce that boosted between the Islamic country and India, and later by the American congressman Buddy Carter, who sent a letter to the award committee last Tuesday.

According to Nobel Committee statutes, members of national assemblies and governments of sovereign states may submit candidacies.

Trump, who promised to end the war in Ukraine, expressed on several occasions the desire to receive the Nobel Peace, ensuring that he deserves him so much or more than Barack Obama, winner in 2009.

He cited as examples the mediation of his government in the conflicts between Israel and Iran; India and Pakistan; Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda; and Egypt and Ethiopia.

Prior to the meeting with Trump, Netanyahu had separate meetings at Blair House – official residence for foreign heads – with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff.

This was the third meeting between Trump and Netanyahu this year, and took place as delegations from Israel and Hamas negotiate the details of the latest proposal for truce and hostage release promoted by Washington.

Trump wanted to take advantage of the impulse generated by the recent truce between Israel and Iran to get a similar agreement in Gaza and said I would like to see a pact signed later this week.

What does the United States mediated proposal

The proposal under discussion, designed by Steve Witkoff, includes a 60 -day truce in the Israeli offensive, during which Hamas would free 10 live hostages and return 18 dead in Gaza, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli arrests.

According to estimates from the Israeli authorities, 50 hostages remain in the range, of which at least 20 would still be alive.

Israel would have already accepted the conditions of the truce, while the Palestinian terrorists presented some amendments that the government of Netanyahu considers “unacceptable.”

During the 60 -day truce, Israel and Hamas should negotiate the terms for a definitive end of the conflict, although positions follow very distant.

Israel insists that the end of the war should include the disintegration of Hamas and proposed to confine the population of Gaza in a city south of the Enclave, while terrorists require the total removal of the Israeli forces of Gaza.
