Natal City Council unanimously approved a bill allows the granting of license in case of death of pets, such as dogs and cats.
Authored by Councilman Robson Carvalho, the proposal was voted under urgent regime last Thursday (26). Now, the text goes to the analysis of Mayor Paulinho Freire, who can sanction or veto the measure.
If sanctioned, the law will allow municipal civil servants to be absent from work for at least one day in case of death of their pet. The benefit may be used up to three times a year, exclusively by civil servants.
The measure is considered unprecedented in Brazil and, if approved, will make Christmas the first capital of the country to officially recognize the mourning for pets as justifiable reason for occupational license.
