Moraes sees camp in front of the STF as “attempt to repeat 8/1” error

by Marcelo Moreira

Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) had a pocket deputies who set up camp in the Três Powers Square in Brasilia on Saturday (26). The decision came from the fake news inquiry and complied with a request from the Attorney General, Paulo Gonet.

According to Moraes, parliamentarians tried to repeat the illegal camps that occurred in front of army barracks after the 2022 elections. These acts, according to the minister, aimed to sabotage the democratic order and press the institutions – especially the STF.

The movement drew attention on social networks. A profile cited in the inquiry published that “is taking traction in the Praça dos Três Powers, more tents coming.” The post was made the night before the order at 19:35.

For Moraes, there is no doubt about the intention of those involved. He stated that the new camp reproduces the same standard as the scammer acts of January 8, 2023. At the time, protesters invaded and depredated the buildings of the three powers.

The minister also held the omission of public authorities in the past, which allowed the installation of similar structures in military areas. According to him, this tolerance was one of the factors that encouraged attacks on the Democratic Rule of Law.

Paulo Gonet, in turn, argued that the act was a risk to public order. He pointed out that the demonstration occurred during the trial, in the Supreme Court, of the criminal action on the coup attacks. For the prosecutor, the presence of deputies was a threat to social tranquility and regular conduct of the process.

Moraes stressed that Praça dos Três Powers is a security area. Therefore, it will not allow defendants supporters on trial to use the space to intimidate ministers or try to obstruct justice. He classified the initiative as a criminal and said there will be no concessions.

The deputies involved left the place on Saturday.
