Moraes asks AGU to take action on Zambelli’s extradition

by Marcelo Moreira

Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) determined that the Union General Advocacy (AGU) follows and adopts measures to ensure the extradition of Carla Zambelli (PL-SP). The federal deputy was arrested last Tuesday (29) in Rome, Italy.

Zambelli was arrested after leaving Brazil to avoid serving the 10 -year prison sentence, determined by the Supreme Court. The deputy was considered an intellectual author of the invasion of the National Council of Justice (CNJ) system in 2023, which resulted in the fraudulent issuance of an arrest warrant against Moraes himself.

The minister’s order was determined after the Supreme Court received official communication on the arrest. In the order, Moraes requested that the AGU take all appropriate measures in the extradition process. The Brazilian government had already formalized the request on June 11, through Itamaraty.

The document sent to the Italian authorities includes the condemnatory sentence, the applied Penal Code articles and a series of guarantees offered by Brazil. Moraes pledged to impose imprisonment for facts prior to extradition, to discard perpetual penalty or worsening the penalty for political reasons and to ensure that Zambelli will not be subjected to torture or inhuman treatment.

The deputy, who has Italian citizenship, was considered on the run after leaving the country in search of political asylum. The defense claims that the case has political motivation, which is rejected by the Brazilian government.

Zambelli will be submitted to a custody hearing on Friday (01) in the Italian court, which will analyze the situation of the parliamentarian, while the extradition request officially processed.
