The Argentine government has announced that, from August, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and sports clubs should increase their social security contributions to “balance” public accounts.
Casa Rosada published a decree in the Official Gazette on Monday (28), determining an increase in the rate from 7.5% to 13.06%, with an increase of 5.56% in a period of 12 months to “recover the deficit incurred during this period”.
In X, the Minister of Deregulating, Federico Sturzenegger, exposed more government arguments for the updating of the rate. “In 2024, sales of Argentine soccer players generated revenue of $ 324 million. However, when it comes to paying social security contributions, the activity that generates this income is subsidized by retirees,” he said.
According to Javier Milei’s management representative, between November 2023 (date of the last tariff review) and April 2024, the system had a deficit of 7 billion Argentine pesos.
Sturzenegger blamed entrepreneurs and unions for the negative results. “Distributed and invisible costs that finance concentrated benefits is the typical formula of the trade union and business caste that, with its political allies, impoverished us, Argentines.”
The minister reported that clubs began adding “non -football -related activities, but because they are clubs, they also benefited from the exemption of contributions to the social security system.”
The new percentage will be charged by the Milei government regarding various activities related to football, from transfers from players to television broadcasting rights.
