A group of 16 deputies of the European Parliament sent on Wednesday (30) a letter to the European Union (EU) high representative and security, Kaja Kallas, to ask the block to adopt sanctions against the Supreme Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes and other court judges.
The letter was sent on the same day the United States applied sanctions against Moraes based on magnitsky law, which aims to violate human rights and corruption.
The initiative to send the letter was from the MEP Polyk Dominik Tarczynski of the nationalist right -wing party Law and Justice.
“I write to urge it to propose that the European Union Council adopt specific sanctions, under the Global Sanctions of the EU Human Rights, against Minister Alexandre de Moraes, the Federal Supreme Court of Brazil, and his allies at the Court, for his flagrant human rights violations and democratic principles,” the letter pointed out.
“Since 2019, Minister Moraes has unilaterally assumed the roles of investigator, prosecutor and judge, issuing secret orders to censor political speeches, freeze assets and arresting critics without due process of law,” said the 16 MEPs.
“Now Minister Moraes supervises the politicized process against his largest political enemy, former President Jair Bolsonaro, on unfounded accusations-seeking to condemn him to life imprisonment [sic] And prevent him from competing and winning the 2026 presidential elections in Brazil, ”said parliamentarians.
“Unfortunately, in Brazil today, an unlected judge is destroying democracy in the name of defending it. The EU needs to act before it is too late,” Tarczynski and the other MEOsPutados have written.
In the X post in which he shared the letter, the Polish MEO congratulated the US President Donald Trump, “for imposing sanctions on Moraes today” and asked the EU “to do the same quickly.”
A Gazeta do Povo He requested a position of the STF about the letter, but has not yet received a response from the court’s press office. This text will be updated if there is return.
