Main Kurdish separatist group starts disarmament process

by Marcelo Moreira

The Guerrilla of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) began on Friday (11) delivering weapons. In May, the end of the armed struggle was announced, which lasted four decades.

In an act in northern Iraq, group militants burned AR-15 rifles that were part of Arsenal.

PKK fights for the independence of Kurdistan, a region that covers part of East of Turkey and northern Iraq and Iran. The group is considered a terrorist by the Turkish government and Western allies of Ankara.

Since 1984, PKK has made attacks on Turkish territory to claim the creation of a Kurdish state in a conflict that has left more than 40,000 dead.

Delivery of the first arms contingent will take place at a ceremony in Suulaymaniyah, in the region of Iraqi Kurdistan, border with Turkey and where the Kurdish combatants take refuge in the mountains.
