France President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, presented on Wednesday (23) a lawsuit for defamation in the United States against the Podcasting Candace Owens, who suggested that the French representative’s wife could be a biological man.

According to information from CNN and France 24, the action was filed at the Higher Court of Delaware. Tom Clare, a lawyer for the Macron family, said in a statement that the case maintains that Owens promoted “a relentless defamation campaign against the Macron, which lasted a year.”

“Owens’s defamation campaign has been clearly planned to harass and cause pain to us and our families, and to attract attention and notoriety. We gave her all the opportunities to retreat at these accusations, but she refused. We sincerely hope that this process clarifies the facts and end this defamation campaign once and for all,” said the statement on behalf of Macron released by Clare.

The complaint highlighted a video posted by Owens in March on YouTube entitled “The First Lady of France is a man?”, Followed by other publications, and a podcaster statement that it was “probably the biggest scandal in world political history”.

Macron and Brigitte’s lawyers claimed that Owens sold products promoting theory and was the first person to present these “unfounded allegations” to the American media and the international public.

In the process, the couple claimed to have suffered “substantial economic damage,” including the loss of future business opportunities.

“Owens promoted and expanded these falsehoods and invented new, all planned to cause maximum damage to Macron and maximize the attention and financial gain to herself,” Clare claimed.

On Instagram, Owens referred to the action, posting a screen capture of a report that talked about the process and writing: “I’m shocked by this today. Stay tuned.”
