President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva sent to Congress a bill to institute the National Day of the Independence Consolidation of Brazil, to be celebrated on July 2. The date marks the definitive expulsion of the country’s Portuguese troops, especially Bahia, which was the last stronghold of Lusa resistance.
The proposal, published in the Federal Official Gazette, does not change the status of (02) of July as a state holiday in Bahia. To become law, the bill still needs to be approved by deputies and senators and later sanctioned by the president himself.
