President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke on Sunday (6) at the opening of the first meeting of the BRICSwhich occurs in Rio de Janeiro and continues until this Monday (7). Reporter Gabriela Morgado accompanied the event.
During his speech, Lula again criticized the performance of the United Nations (UN) and defended the creation of a Palestinian state, stating that the entity has been losing credibility.
He also criticized the organization of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO), stating that it encourages the arms race and that “it is easier to invest in war than in peace.”
The president again condemned the attacks on Iran without directly quoting the United States and re -classified Israel’s actions against Palestine as “genocide.”
Reform of Global and South Global Governance
Lula also argued that Global Southern countries must have permanent chairs on the UN Security Council. According to him, multilateralism is under threat and needs to be strengthened with more representativeness.
The session dedicated to the themes “Peace and Security” and “Global Governance Reform” follows the public with the speech of the other participating leaders. After that, there will be a lunch and at 4 pm a meeting on artificial intelligence, multilateralism and economy is planned.
In addition to Brazil, 28 other countries and seven international organizations participate in the summit. The leaders of China, Russia, Iran and Egypt did not come to Brazil, but sent representatives. Russian President Vladimir Putin participates in video conferencing.
Marina Silva defends climate financing and fair transition
Earlier, the Environment Minister, Marina Silva, stressed that developing countries are unanimous about the need for resources and technology for actions to combat climate change.
Climate funding should be one of the central points of the final statement of the BRICS summit, which ends on Monday (7) in the south of Rio de Janeiro.
Marina also mentioned the Brazilian proposal of creation of the Forest Forests Fund forever, as well as a second initiative built in partnership with global northern countries.
The minister also commented on the exploitation of the equatorial margin in the north of the country, the target of criticism from environmentalists. According to her, the whole world lives a moment of contradiction in relation to environmental issues, but Brazil has maintained its commitment to a fair energy transition.
