After the BRICS summit, President Lula received on Tuesday (8) India Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in Brasilia. The meeting at the Planalto Palace focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries.
During the meeting, Lula and Modi defined five priority areas for cooperation in the coming years. They also advocated joint action for the development of the global south.
According to Lula, “Brazil and India are sister nations” and cannot “remain distant”. The president pointed out that both countries face similar challenges and share strategic interests.
Among the topics discussed are defense and safety, food and nutritional security, energy transition and climate change, digital transformation and technological innovation. In addition, countries want to expand partnerships in industrial sectors such as aeronautics, pharmacist, oil, gas and critical minerals.
Change for UN Changes and Hunger Fighting
During the meeting, Lula again criticized the composition of the UN Security Council. For him, “it is unacceptable that countries of our size do not occupy permanent seats.” According to the president, Brazil and India have advocated changes in global governance and act together in forums such as the G20 and BRICS to strengthen multilateralism.
Another central theme of the conversation was the fight against hunger and poverty. Lula thanked Modi for the participation of India in the global alliance against hunger and poverty. “We are natural allies in response to two of the biggest challenges of our time,” he said.
Expanding economic relations
Brazil and India have had diplomatic relations for almost 80 years. In recent years, commercial ties between the two economies have grown. India already occupies the tenth position among the main business partners in Brazil. By 2024, the trade current between the two countries totaled $ 12 billion.
In addition, India is the sixth largest supplier of products to the Brazilian market. Indian exports to Brazil reached US $ 6.8 billion this year.
Modi’s visit takes place at a time of approximation between emerging economies, which seek more space in international decisions and expand strategic partnerships for sustainable growth.
