Losing population, China creates aid to increase birth

by Marcelo Moreira

The government of China announced on Monday (28) the creation of a National Program for Assistance for Families with young children, which will begin in 2025, with the aim of increasing birth rates in the country.

According to information from the Xinhua state agency, the program will offer families 3,600 yuans (about $ 2,800) per year for each child under three years. It is estimated that the initiative will serve more than 20 million families per year.

The fall in birth rates and the consequent reduction of China’s population concerns the authorities of the communist dictatorship: in January, the national statistics department reported that the country’s population fell for the third consecutive year by 2024, from 1.409 billion by 2023 to 1.408 billion last year.

The number of births and the birth rate in China fell for seven years in a row and were light high in 2024, with births totaling 9.54 million (were 9.02 million by 2023) and the birth rate was 6.77 births per thousand inhabitants (the index had been 6.39 by 2023).

Beijing’s dictatorship had already implemented other measures to try to contain the demographic crisis. In September last year, he announced that he would no longer allow Chinese children by citizens from other countries.

In 2015, the communist dictatorship changed the policy of the only child – which since 1979 stipulated forced sterilization and miscarriages and other punishments for couples who had more than one child – and began to allow two children per couple.

In May 2021, he authorized three children as a couple, and two months later withdrew punishments for those who do not respect the rule, in practice, releasing families so that they have as many children.
