The recent decisions of Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (STF) against former President Jair Bolsonaro caused a wave of critical demonstrations in the United States. The movement was driven by the performance of licensed parliamentarian Eduardo Bolsonaro, who has been since March in the country.
On the 18th, the American Secretary of State, Marco Rubioannounced the revocation of the visa of Moraes and “allies” in the Supreme Court, without nominally citing the others affected by the decision.
In a publication in the X, he reported the measure against the Brazilian magistrate, citing practices of censorship and political persecution against Bolsonaro.
“President Trump has made it clear that his government will be responsible for censorship of protected expression in the United States. Minister Alexandre de Moraes’s political witches of the Supreme Court, against Jair Bolsonaro has created such a comprehensive persecution and censorship complex that not only violates Brazil’s basic rights, but also extends beyond Brazil’s borders,” the secretary wrote.
The announcement of the US government quickly began to reverberate between authorities and longtime critics of Moraes’ performance in the Brazilian judiciary.
To republican deputed María Elvira Salazarwho has long condemned actions by the Brazilian minister and calls for sanctions against him, said on Saturday (19) that the revocation of the visa represents only the beginning of a broader process of liability.
“The revocation of the visa is a beginning, we now need full accountability,” wrote the parliamentarian in publication on network X.
In the post, Salazar emphasized that he denounces the abuse of Moraes “from the first day” and condemned “censorship, prisons and political persecution” in Brazil, which, according to her, “are incompatible with any democratic system.”
Jason Millercampaign strategist and former senior advisor to President Donald Trump, also expressed outrage at the recent decisions against Bolsonaro in the Supreme Court.
Sharing a note from the Brazilian Superior Court, Millei declared in X on Monday (21): “unbelievable. Alexandre de Moraes again takes all the ‘credit’ for political persecution against President Jair Bolsonaro. Moraes wants the whole world to know that he rules Brazil, not Lula.”
Mike Benzformer employee of the US State Department and current executive director of the Foundation on Online Freedom, focused on the surveillance of freedom of expression, also condemned the restrictions imposed by the STF to Bolsonaro.
On Tuesday (22), he reposed a video of the former president with an electronic anklet with a comment stating that “justice should arrive in Brazil”.
Another figure from the American right who was involved in US Congress investigations last year to find out whether the judicial decisions of Moraes needed legitimacy is the Republican deputy Chris Smithone of the oldest members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Representatives.
In June last year, he sent an official letter to Minister Alexandre de Moraes, expressing “concern” with alleged violations of civil liberties and censorship to the press in Brazil.
Steve Bannon, a former White House political and Trump’s first term, spoke earlier this month that the president of the United States was “very boring” with the situation faced by Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, in statements to the portal UOL.
“We have been great supporters of the Bolsonaro movement since we met it in 2017. And I think the demonstration shows that President Trump is totally aware of what is happening,” Bannon told the Brazilian portal at the time.
Europe authorities also express support for Bolsonaro
Bolsonaro support demonstrations were not restricted to the United States and Brazil. The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbanshared a message this week in defense of former President Jair Messias Bolsonaro (PL).
