Buenos Aires Province Governor Axel Kicillof and former President Cristina Kirchner, both of the Argentine President Javier Milei, criticized Peter Lamelas, the nominee of US representative Donald Trump to be the United States ambassador in Argentina.
On Tuesday (22), at the hearing of the American Senate Foreign Committee (house that will need to approve his appointment), Lamelas made comments that irritated the Argentine left.
Among other points, he said that if confirmed for office, he will visit governors to provide a “collaboration” to avoid corruption of local agents involving China.
He also said he will act for Kirchner to “receive the justice he deserves.” The former president was accused of having covered Iranians involved in the attack on the Israeli Argentine Mutual Association (Amia), which killed 85 people in 1994.
Since last month, Kirchner has been in house arrest to be sentenced to six years in prison for corruption in another case, in the bidding of road works, after confirmation of the sentence by the Argentine Supreme Court.
“[Kirchner] is under house arrest due to the political favoritism that occurs there [na Argentina]. And, of course, she was not involved in the attacks on the love, as far as we know, but was definitely involved in some way in the cover -up, ”said Lamelas, according to information from the newspaper Clarín.
“Who knows if she was involved in the death of the special prosecutor?” He added, in reference to prosecutor Alberto Nisman, found dead at his home in 2015 days after reporting Kirchner for the case.
At X, Kicillof and Kirchner countered Lamelas. “Mr. Lamelas’ statements evoke the darkest times of the United States interference in the democratic life of our region. These statements are not an isolated outburst. Apparently, Washington has decided to reissue the obsolete doctrine monroe: he is imposing extortive fares of Brazil, questioning the sovereignty of the Panama canal and seeking to influence judicial proceedings outside his jurisdiction,” the governor wrote.
Already Kirchner spoke of “obsession” by the United States. “As if we didn’t have a judiciary sufficiently controlled remotely, they sent us a new plenipotentiary prosecutor directly from Mar-lago [resort onde Trump tem residência na Flórida]. “Meanwhile, Trump, who assumed the US presidency with 24 criminal accusations, did not fulfill his promise to reveal the names on the list of [o financista Jeffrey] Epstein in cases involving pedophilia, corruption of minors and sexual abuse … Not even the US judiciary is investigating its accidental suicide. They should clean their own home before commenting on ours, ”added Kirchner.
Epstein was found dead in his cell in 2019, when he was awaiting trial for a minor sex trafficking scheme. In recent days, Trump has been wearing out because his government has confirmed that the financier’s death was a suicide and because he claimed that a list of famous Epstein clients does not exist, contrary to theories of US president’s supporters.
Kirchner also commented on Lamela’s statement about corruption involving China. “He will also monitor the Argentine business community linked to Chinese companies that control the monopoly of telecommunications in Argentina and who was celebrating July 4 at its embassy?”
