The 24-year-old tourist was chased and arrested by police on Wednesday night (21st) in the historic Via Veneto area near the US Embassy. He had a marble base of ancient pillars weighing 30 kilos.
The stolen items were at his feet as tourists escaped on electric scooters. Police officers report that the young man took the item as a “souvenir” but there is no information on whether the item was purchased or not.
Italian authorities say he has not yet been charged, but is being investigated on charges of “receiving stolen cultural property.” The tourist’s identities are not disclosed.
Recently, authorities have also raised concerns about the behavior of other tourists. A tourist was arrested for carving his initials at the Colosseum and driving a scooter at the ruins of Pompeii.
