A 24-year-old tourist was chased and arrested on Wednesday night (21st) in the Via Veneto historic district near the United States Embassy. He brought with him the marble pedestal of a 30 -pound Roman column.
The stolen object was beneath the tourist’s legs as he fled his electric scooter. According to police, the young man took the object as a “souvenir”, but there is no information on whether he paid for it.
According to Italian authorities, the man has not yet been accused of “the acquisition of stolen cultural goods”. The identity of the tourist was not disclosed.
Recently, authorities are increasingly concerned about the behavior of other visitors. A tourist was arrested after engraving his own monogram on the Coliseum and driving a motorcycle on the ruins of Pompeii.
