Federal Deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) was referred to the Rebibbia Penitentiary Complex in Italy, specifically to the Germana Stefanini women’s prison, after his arrest by Italian authorities last Tuesday (29).
The complex, considered one of the largest in Europe, is known for overcrowding and being visited by the late Pope Francis in 2024. In the past, the penitentiary was administered by nuns.
Public data from Italy’s Penitentiary Administration Department point out that by the end of June, 369 women were detained at the unit where Zambelli is, above the prison’s ability to hold around 100 more people. Throughout the complex there are at least 1,500 prisoners.
More than 30% of detainees are foreign and the site receives maximum and average security prey, as well as people awaiting trial.
The entire penitentiary complex has 260 thousand square meters. It is divided into three units: two male and one female.
The deputy will pass a custody hearing on Friday (1st), when she will be decided if she will remain in the women’s prison in Rome or if the extradition process for Brazil in house arrest or in freedom can await.
Zambelli was sentenced in May by the first class of the Supreme Court for the invasion of the National Council of Justice (CNJ) system. In addition to the 10 -year sentence, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the case, determined the loss of mandate and the payment of a fine of R $ 2 million in material and moral damages at the time.
In June, she announced that she was leaving Brazil for medical treatment. The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) requested the pre-trial detention of the federal deputy after the statement.
