Hamas gives a positive response to ceasefire in the Gaza Strip

by Marcelo Moreira

The Hamas Militant Group gave a positive response to the latest ceasefire proposal presented by Donald Trump, which foresees a 60-day truce in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages during this period. The proposal still needs to be formally discussed between the parties involved, but Hamas signaling was received as a possible advance in the face of the impasse that has lasted almost two years.

The new attempted ceasefire occurs amid a climb of violence in the region. This week, Israel was accused of bombing a coffee in the Gaza Strip with an indiscriminate pump, which further intensified the suffering of the Palestinian population. The images of the site show the destruction caused by the attack, which is being investigated.

During a speech at Brics, President Lula commented on the conflict, but avoided directly criticizing Israel without using the term “genocide.” Speech repercussions, especially in the face of the international context of growing pressure for a peace agreement. Trump’s proposal seeks to recover the path of diplomacy after previous attempts that failed in the following stages.

The Israeli government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, requires the end of Hamas’s activities and the withdrawal of the Gaza Strip group. Hamas, in turn, states that he will not leave Palestinian territory and insist on the removal of Israeli troops. Even with opposite positions, Hamas’s positive response to the American proposal brings a new possibility for advancing negotiations.
