A group of journalists in the north of the Gaza range began a hunger strike to draw global attention to what they call “deliberate use of hunger as a weapon by Israel.” The demonstration is due to the sharp increase in deaths related to severe food insecurity and malnutrition under Israeli blockade of humanitarian aid.
This Wednesday (23), more than 100 human rights organizations have asked governments to take action as hunger spreads in Gaza. In a statement, the groups warn that tons of food, drinking water, medical supplies and other items are trapped outside the territory, as humanitarian aid organizations are prevented from accessing or delivering them.
The Ministry of Health of Gaza says that at least ten people die a day for lack of food. According to the institution, 111 people hungry or related complications from the beginning of the conflict – on October 7, 2023. During this period, Israeli forces killed almost 60,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
Israel cut all supplies to Gaza in March and raised a block in May with new measures taken as necessary to prevent help from being diverted to militant groups. The country denies that it is responsible for food scarcity.
