Greece has started a process for the purchase of four new submarines, and at least two will be able to launch long -range cruise missiles, with a range of over 1,000 kilometers.

This initiative is part of the “Agenda 2030” modernization program and the strategic doctrine “Achilles Shield”, which seeks to transform the Hellenic Navy of a force focused mainly on the coastal defense to a wider strategic dissuasion.

The new submarines will replace current 209 vessels, made in Germany, and should have advanced technology such as independent air propulsion, lithium -ion batteries, reduced acoustic and magnetic signatures, as well as low frequency active. The expected weaponry includes heavy torpedoes, anti -vintage and anti -aircraft missiles, short -range air defense systems, and cruise missiles for land attacks, expanding the fleet’s operational capacity for maritime control missions, area denial and special operations.

The acquisition process involves consultations with several international shipyards, with competitors such as German Submarines Type 218 and 209ng, the French classes Scorpène and Barracuda, and the Swedish A26 Blekinge. At least 25% of the contract should include the Greek industry.

Greece accompanies similar movements in other European navies, such as the Netherlands, which has revised its Tomahawk missile plans and now evaluates alternatives such as MBDA’s MDCN naval missile, which can also be adopted by the Greeks.
