Canada Prime Minister Mark Carnery said on Wednesday that his government will recognize a Palestinian state in September, in the third announcement in this sense by a leader of a G7 country in less than a week.
“Canada has long been committed to a two -state solution, an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state, living side by side with the state of Israel in peace and security,” said Carry, according to CNN reports.
“Canada intends to recognize the Palestinian state at the 80th General Assembly of the United Nations,” said Carry. “We intend to do so because the Palestinian authority has committed to lead a very necessary reform.”
Before him, on Tuesday (29), UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said his government will recognize a Palestinian state in September, if Israel did not solve what he called “catastrophic situation” in the Gaza Strip, promote a ceasefire with the terrorist group Hamas and committed to the solution of two states in the region.
On Thursday (24), France President Emmanuel Macron said his country will recognize the Palestinian state at the next UN General Assembly.
On Wednesday, Carry said he talked to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and that he would have assured him that there will be elections in the Palestinian territories in 2026 in which Hamas (which rules the Gaza Strip) “will not participate” and committed “not to militarize the state of Palestine.”
