Flu Vaccine Coverage remains low in Brazil

by Marcelo Moreira

Despite the reduction in influenza cases in various regions of the country, the Ministry of Health keeps the warning about low vaccination coverage. To date, only 45.61% of the target audience received the dose of influenza vaccine, a percentage far below the 90% target.

Data from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) point out that 19 states and the Federal District remain in a state of attention, with records of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SRAG) at alert, risk or high risk levels. Since the beginning of the year, Brazil has exceeded 73,000 cases of the disease.

The vaccination campaign focuses on children, pregnant women, the elderly and other vulnerable groups. However, the adhesion is below expected. States such as São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Paraná lead in number of doses applied. On the other hand, Sergipe, Mato Grosso and Alagoas face low demand for immunization.
