Licensed federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) and journalist Paulo Figueiredo issued a joint note on Wednesday (30) in support of the sanctions imposed by the United States government to the Supreme Court Minister (STF), Alexandre de Moraes. The text was published after the official announcement of the measure, which was applied based on Global Magnitsky law and provides punishments for alleged human rights violations.
In the note, the two claim that the decision represents a historic milestone and accuse Moraes of promoting censorship, political repression and judicial persecution in Brazil. “Today, the United States of America […] They confirmed what millions of Brazilians already knew: Alexandre de Moraes is a human rights violator, ”says the text signed by the two.
Eduardo Bolsonaro and Paulo Figueiredo classify sanctions as “hard”, but claim they are mild to the actions attributed to the STF minister. According to the note, these actions would have caused excellent, arrests without judgment, confiscation of assets and even deaths. They still ask other countries to join the United States in condemnation and punishment to Moraes, stating that “the time has come for choice: to be with Moraes or Brazil.”
Despite identifying themselves as “in exile”, Eduardo Bolsonaro is still a federal deputy, although he is licensed from office. Already Paulo Figueiredo resides in the United States, where he acts as a political journalist and is the target of lawsuits in Brazil for statements made in American territory.
The note was published on the same day that President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing additional tariffs on Brazil and sanctioning Alexandre de Moraes. The White House accuses the minister of abusing his power by censoring political opponents and threatening American companies with fines and blocks for not complying with Brazilian court orders.
