Edinho Silva is elected new national president of the PT

The former mayor of Araraquara (SP), Edinho Silva, was elected on Monday (7) the new national president of the Workers Party (PT). The choice was after the process of direct election (PED), held on Sunday (6), when thousands of affiliates went to the polls across the country. With 73.48% of the votes to be found so far, Edinho will replace Senator Humberto Costa (PE), who has interimly held the position since the departure of Gleisi Hoffmann.

Edinho Silva will command the caption for the next four years. The inauguration is scheduled for August, during a national party meeting. Former treasurer of Dilma Rousseff’s campaign and former minister of the presidency’s Communication Secretariat, Edinho also coordinated Lula’s presidential campaign in 2022 and was supported by the party’s president and the party’s majority current, building a new Brazil (CNB).

The victory was confirmed even without the totalization of the votes of states such as Minas Gerais, Bahia, Pernambuco, Pará, Paraná and Rio de Janeiro. In the case of Minas, the electoral process had been postponed and has no new date set. With the counting manually, due to the use of paper banknotes, the final data should be released in the coming days.

Edinho Silva will have the mission of leading the party in the 2026 elections, considered internally as one of the biggest challenges of the PT. At G1, the new president stated that Lula’s reelection is the main objective of the subtitle and highlighted the need to strengthen political alliances across the country. He also pointed out the importance of resuming base work and connecting to the peripheries.

The new leader argues that the party should expand dialogue with society and submit proposals on topics such as public safety, energy transition and tax justice. At 60, Edinho has been affiliated with the PT since 1985, was a state deputy by São Paulo and held four terms as mayor of Araraquara.
