Diogo Jota of Liverpool dies in a car accident at 28

Striker Diogo Jota, from the Portuguese team and the English club Liverpool, and his brother André died in the early hours of Thursday (3) in a car accident on Estrada A52, in the province of Zamora, Spain.

Jota was 28 years old, and had married on the 22nd with Ruth Cardosowith whom I had a relationship of over a decade and three children. His 26 -year -old brother André Felipe Silva was also a soccer player and worked at Penafiel, a team of the second division of Portugal.

According to sources involved in the investigation, the two Portuguese brothers died aboard a Lamborghini, which, for reasons not yet clarified, left the highlight at kilometer 65, around 00h40 (local time). The hypothesis of the civil guard is that one of the car tires burst during an overtaking, causing it to get off the road and fire.

Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, graduated from the Portuguese clubs Gondomar and Paços de Ferreira, was an Atletico Madrid player in 2016 and later from Porto until 2018, when he moved to the English Championship. Since 2020, he was a Liverpool player.

Diogo Jota participated in the two League Titles of Nations of Portugal, the first in 2018/2019 and the last last month. He scored 14 goals in 49 games for the country’s national team.

Liverpool “devastated”

In a statement, Liverpool said it was “devastated” with the news and asked for respect for the family’s privacy at this time. “Liverpool is devastated by the tragic death of Diogo Jota. The club was informed that the 28-year-old died in a car accident in Spain, along with his brother, André. Portugal Prime Minister Luís Montenegro lamented the deaths and said it was “a sad day” for the sport. “The news of Diogo Jota’s death, an athlete who has honored the name of Portugal, and his brother is unexpected and tragic. I present my deepest condolences to the family. It’s a sad day for football and national and international sport,” he wrote at X.
