Delta Aquaridos and Alpha Capricornids illuminate the sky of July

by Marcelo Moreira

In these last two days of July, Wednesday (30) and Thursday (31), the skies will be illuminated by two meteor rains: Alpha Capricornids and Southern Aquarid Delta.

The first will have its peak between Wednesday night and the dawn of Thursday. Already the second can be contemplated in all its magnitude at dawn on July 31.

Remember that Both will be visible in Brazil If the weather conditions are favorable to observation.

Tips for observing the meteor rains this late July

To have the best experience when observing Capricornids Alpha and Southern Aquarid Delta, follow these tips:

  • Choose the ideal location: Look for a dark environment – with low light pollution – and far from large buildings that can obstruct vision. Rural areas or urban parks away from the city’s lights are the best options;
  • Use equipment (optional): Although phenomena are visible to the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope can significantly improve observation, allowing you to see more details of the event;
  • See the weather forecast: Make sure the sky will be clean in the dusk this Wednesday (30). Cloudless sky conditions are essential for good visibility.

Alpha Capricornids has a rate of 5 meteors per hour, with approximate speed of 23 km/s. Modest, but with a lot of splendor. To contemplate it clearly, just find the constellation of Capricorn in the sky.

Already Delta Aquaridos do Sul has its own glow, with 15 to 20 meteors per hour, about 41 km/s. To observe this light show, look for aquarium constellation.
