Cyclone causes strong winds, rain and low temperatures across the country

An extratropical cyclone caused gusts of wind in the Southeast and Southern regions of Brazil and should bring cold air mass throughout the week. The phenomenon was formed between Sunday (27) and this Monday (28) on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, where more than 340 thousand addresses are without light.

According to the climatempo meteorology company, gusts were recorded from 100 km/h in cities such as Canguçu (RS). The most intense wind should last until the night of Monday (28), with greater risk between the coast of Porto Alegre (RS) and the region of Santos (SP).

From Tuesday (29), the Extratropical Cyclone begins to move away from the coast, but continues to act in the ocean. According to meteorologists, the effects of the system will still be felt in the coming days, with low temperatures, possibility of frost and agitated sea.

The Brazilian Navy issued a hangover alert, with waves of up to 3.5 meters in the lane between mustard (RS) and Florianópolis (SC) until Wednesday, and between Iguape (SP) and Macaé (RJ) from Tuesday until Thursday (31). Small boats should avoid navigating in these sections.

In addition to causing gusts of wind, the cyclone will also overthrow temperatures in part of the country. With the advancement of polar air mass, the lowest temperatures of the year in much of southern Brazil should be recorded this Tuesday (29) and Wednesday (30). In Porto Alegre (RS), the dawn of Wednesday must be the coldest, with a minimum expected of 6 ° C. Curitiba (PR) must dawn with 4 ° C and São Paulo (SP) with 5 ° C.

For meteorologists, there is a chance of punctual snow at the end of the night of Monday (28) in the highest areas of Santa Catarina. In the southern Santa Catarina plateau, the minimums can reach −5 ºC or −6 ºC. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, there is a risk of frost in the interior of São Paulo, in the south of Minas Gerais and in areas of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Rio Grande do Sul without light

This Monday (28), the passage of the Extratropical Cyclone affected the supply of electricity in Rio Grande do Sul and 346 thousand addresses are without light. The most impacted cities were Porto Alegre, Capão Canoa, Viamão and Osório.

Distributor CEEE Equatorial reported that teams are acting on a “maximum warning regime” to restore the power grid, “focusing on regions with the largest number of occurrences”.
