China and the United States agreed to extend the break in the tariffs applied to imports from both countries after the second day of negotiations in Stockholm, Sweden.
The Deputy Minister of Chinese Trade, Li Chenggang, said that the truce, which maintains rates 30% for goods sent from China to the US, will continue. He did not specify the duration of the extension, but Trump had already extended the deadline for 90 days, setting the deadline on August 12.
“According to the consensus between China and the US, both sides will continue to press the continuous extension of the break in the part of 24% of reciprocal tariffs on the US side, as well as the countermeasures on the Chinese side,” Li Chenggang said after the negotiations on Tuesday (29).
Negotiations can pave the way for a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the end of the year, although Trump has made any effort to look for him and the Chinese authorities did not mention it.
After months threatening to impose high tariffs on business partners, Trump secured commercial agreements with the European Union, Japan and other countries, but China’s powerful economy, and their mastery over rare land flows make these negotiations particularly complex.
In May, both sides retreated in the imposition of three -digit tariffs on each other, which would equivalent to a bilateral commercial embargo.
