Canada recognizing Palestinian state makes agreement difficult

United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Canada’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state in September hinders trade negotiations with the neighboring country.

“Wow! Canada has just announced that it supports the creation of a state for Palestine. This will make us very difficult for us to close a trade deal with them. Oh, Canada!” Trump wrote on the Truth Social network, ironic with the country’s anthem (“O Canada”).

On Wednesday (30), Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government will recognize a Palestinian state in September at the 80th United Nations Assembly, in the third announcement in this sense made by a leader of a G7 country in less than a week-before, the United Kingdom and France had expressed such an intention.

At zero hour this Friday (1st, east time of the United States, 1h from Brasília), the deadline for the United States to close commercial agreements with other countries.

According to CNN, if there is no agreement with Ottawa, US fees on importing Canadian products not covered by the free trade agreement between the two countries and Mexico could increase from 25% to 35%.
