British aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales arrived this week at the port of Darwin marking the first visit of a royal navy-type ship to Australia in almost three decades.
The vessel was welcomed with tug jets and a traditional ceremony led by the indigenous people Larrakia, ancestral guardian of the region. The stop is part of the British attack group in Indo-Pacific, with the HMS Prince of Wales acting as chief ship.

The visit ends the participation of the aircraft carrier in the Talisman Sabre 2025 military exercise, the largest joint training in Australia, which brought together about 35,000 military personnel from 19 countries. During the exercise, the British ship operated on the North Australian coast alongside USS George Washington’s USS George Washington attack group, highlighting joint naval power. The HMS Prince of Wales has also received MV-22 aircraft from the US Marines, anticipating the integration of F-35B fighters and more American troops into the mission.
The presence of the aircraft carrier is part of Operation HighMast, the main naval unfolding of the United Kingdom in 2025, lasting eight months and participation of 12 countries. In all, more than 4,500 British military personnel are involved, including sailors, soldiers and Air Force members.
The mission aims to reinforce cooperation with allies, promote safety in Indo-Pacific and value the British presence in the region.
