BRICS summit ends this Monday (07)

by Marcelo Moreira

The BRICS summit, based in Rio de Janeiro, ends this Monday (07). For the last day, a new “family photo” is planned between heads of state and government, a plenary session to discuss questions about “environment, COP30 and Global Health”, and a statement to the press of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. This Monday’s meeting should take place at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM).

On Sunday (06), Lula criticized the United Nations (UN) performance, stating that the entity has been losing credibility, as well as defending the reform of global and southern global governance, as these countries must have permanent chairs on the UN Security Council. According to the Brazilian president, multilateralism is under threat and needs to be strengthened more representatively.

After the meeting, there was the formal final statement of the summit. The document condemned military attacks against Iran on June 13, but did not mention the United States and Israel. The text also criticized the attacks on the Gaza Strip defending a solution in the region. Throughout the negotiations, the tone of the statement on topics such as conflict with Iran and the Palestinian issue was a source of divergence between countries.
