The BRICS condemned on Sunday (6), in its summit statement in Rio de Janeiro, the attacks on the railway lines in Russia a month ago, which Moscow attributed to the sabotage of Ukraine.
“We vehemently condemn the attacks on bridges and the rail infrastructure that deliberately hit civilians in the regions of Bryansk, Kursk and Voronezh, in the Russian Federation, on May 31, June 1, 2025, resulting in several civilian victims, including children,” says the thirty -fifth point of the declaration.
The three explosive attacks resulted in the derailment of two trains, one of which was a passenger train, killing seven people and injuring more than one hundred, and damaging three rails.
In the conviction expressed by the group, which occupies a paragraph of the Rio de Janeiro Declaration, Ukraine is not mentioned, although in two other points of the document, alluding to the conflict triggered by the Russian invasion in February 2022.
One of the points of the statement recalls the positions of each of the Brics Member Countries in relation to “the conflict in Ukraine”, although at no time Russia is mentioned as the aggressor country, as usual in the group’s statements since the beginning of the war.
“We observe with appreciation of relevant mediation proposals and good offices, including the establishment of the African Peace Initiative and the Group of Friends for Peace, aiming at the peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. We hope that current efforts will lead to a sustainable peace agreement,” says the statement signed on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro.
Russia is one of the founding members of BRICS. President Vladimir Putin participated in the summit for video conferencing, as he cannot travel to Brazil due to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which accuses him of war crimes in Ukraine.
Brazil and China, also founding members of BRICS, are the driving forces behind the group of friends for peace and a proposal to end the conflict that has been ignored by Ukraine and Western countries, as it is considered of interest to Kremlin.
