The Brazilian government issued an official note on Tuesday (30) expressing solidarity with the Supreme Court Minister (STF) Alexandre de Moraes, the target of sanctions imposed by the United States. In the text, the Planalto Palace criticizes the decision of the US government and states that any attempt to weaken the judiciary represents a threat to democracy.
According to the note, Brazil is a sovereign and democratic country that respects human rights and independence between powers. The statement claims to be “unacceptable the interference of the US government in Brazilian justice” and argues that institutional autonomy has been one of the pillars of Brazilian foreign policy.
Planalto attributes the offensive against Moraes to the performance of Brazilian politicians who, according to the text, “they betray our homeland and our people in defense of their own interests.” The government also points out that “justice is not negotiated” and that the law is valid for everyone, be they citizens, companies and digital platforms, when their activities impact the life of the population and the functioning of democracy.
The note also criticizes the use of political arguments to justify trade measures against Brazilian exports. The government classifies this stance as unjustifiable and states that it compromises national sovereignty and impairs the historical relationship between the two countries. The text also recalls that Brazil has accumulated a commercial deficit with the United States in recent decades.
In the end, the Brazilian government reaffirms that it is open to dialogue on commercial topics, but will not give up the defense instruments provided for in its legislation. According to the statement, the evaluation of the impacts of sanctions and the formulation of actions to protect Brazilian workers, companies and families have already begun.
