Brazil officially left the hunger map of the United Nations (UN). The announcement was made on Monday (28), during the second dome of food systems, held in Adi Ababa, capital of Ethiopia. The new survey shows that less than 2.5% of the Brazilian population is at risk of malnutrition – below the limit considered to classify a country in severe food insecurity.
The data is based on the average of 2022 to 2024 and marks the second time Brazil leaves the list. The first withdrawal took place in 2014, however, from 2018, the country retreated to the hunger map during the 2018/2019/2020 triennium.
UN recognition is the result of public policies aimed at combating hunger and expanding the social protection network. In a statement, Minister of Development and Social Assistance, Wellington Dias, highlighted the importance of the achievement. There is no sovereignty without food justice, and there is no social justice without democracy. ”
The hunger map is based on United Nations Food and Agriculture Reports (FAO) and serves as a global reference for measuring the severity of hunger in the world.
