If you have ever had a black car and was completely shocked by the cabin temperature after standing in the sun for a few hours, you probably thought about whether the color would play a role.

Is it true that black cars warm up faster than other colors of vehicles? The answer is yes. When we park a white and a black car in the sun for the same amount of time, we find that the inside of the white car remains much cooler than the black.

This interesting phenomenon is a 2011 study examined the Berkeley Lab By researchers at the Department of Environmental Energy. Researchers have come to the conclusion that light-colored vehicles replace nearly 60%of sunlight, while dark colors are much more absorbed.

During the study, two Honda Civic – one silver and one black – were left on a hot day in Sacramento, California. After an hour, it was found that the inside of the black car was 5-6 ° C warmer than the silver.

In addition to internal temperatures, researchers have also discovered that lighter painting improves the efficiency of the car, as less air conditioning is needed to maintain a pleasant temperature. This increases fuel savings by up to 2%while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 2%.

Why is this happening? One reason is that the black surfaces swallow more sunlight and convert it to heat, which makes the cabiner warmer.

In addition, black cars radiate heat more efficiently than lighter color, meaning that the heat absorbed by the surface is more likely to fall into the surrounding air than to reflect.

Although other factors, such as the sun’s incidence angle or the materials used for the structure of the vehicle, may affect, in general, dark colors swallow more heat than light.
