Alexandre de Moraes prohibits publication of Bolsonaro interviews on social networks

by Marcelo Moreira

Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) decided on Monday (21) to expand the restrictions imposed on former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The new determination prohibits the publication and republication of Bolsonaro interviews on any social network. The diligence includes live broadcasts, video or audio stretches and even transcripts, even if made by third parties.

According to the order, the measure applies to allied profiles, press vehicles or anyone else who uses social networks as a means of broadcasting. Moraes pointed out that the use of these platforms, even through third parties, constitutes an attempt to circumvent judicial restrictions. Failure to comply may lead to the revocation of current measures and the immediate decree of Bolsonaro’s arrest.

The decision reinforces the precautionary measures imposed last Friday (18), which included Bolsonaro’s ban using social networks, directly or through others. Now, the minister makes it clear that this also applies to the republication of content derived from interviews, which prevents the former president from having his lines disclosed even without posting in person.

Given the new order, the Liberal Party canceled a press conference that would have Bolsonaro’s participation in the House of Representatives on Monday. The decision was made after the party’s legal team evaluated that the event’s broadcast on social networks could violate the Supreme’s determinations.

The restrictions are part of an inquiry that investigates the attempted coup d’état to prevent the inauguration of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro is already fulfilling other measures, such as the use of electronic anklet, night home collection and prohibition of contact with other investigators, diplomats and foreign authorities.
