The presidents of the Federal Senate, David Alcolumbre, and the House of Representatives, Hugo Motta, released on Thursday (10) a joint note in which react to the decision of the United States from imposing new tariffs on strategic sectors of the Brazilian economy. The measure, announced by US President Donald Trump, provides for a 50% tax on Brazilian products.
In the statement, alcohubre and Motta point out that Brazil’s response should occur with dialogue in the diplomatic and commercial fields. They claim that the National Congress will closely follow the developments of the American decision and ensure that Parliament is mobilized to protect the national economy and the jobs of Brazilians.
Parliamentary leaders also mention the recent approval of the economic reciprocity law in April this year. The text, according to the note, offers Brazil a legal mechanism to react to hostile measures imposed by other countries, preserving national sovereignty and the competitiveness of the productive sector.
“We will be ready to act with balance and firmness in defense of our economy, our productive sector and the protection of the jobs of Brazilians,” concluded Alcolumbre and Motta in the joint statement.
