AGU says Brazil can adopt measures on US sanction

by Marcelo Moreira

The attorney general of the Union, Jorge Messias, said on Wednesday (30) that the Brazilian government could take formal measures in response to the sanction imposed by the United States to Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (STF). The punishment was applied based on magnitsky law, a US legislation that allows the restriction of goods and business to foreigners accused of corruption or human rights violations.

In a publication on social networks, Messiah classified the US decision as “arbitrary and unjustifiable” and said that Brazil will adopt “weighted and conscious” actions to defend national sovereignty and the autonomy of the judiciary. According to him, the country will not accept illegitimate pressures against authorities operating within constitutional limits.

“The existence of independent justice is an essential pillar of any democracy. We Brazilians will never admit to suffer political harassment against those who fulfill their constitutional duty here,” wrote Messiah.

The measure announced by the US blocks all the eventual goods that Moraes has in the country and prohibits US companies and citizens from maintaining business relations with it.

Jorge Messias note

“Sovereign Brazil

It deserves strong repudiation any attempt to intimidate the Brazilian judiciary, especially when aimed at affecting the integrity of the exercise of its constitutional functions.

The arbitrary and unjustifiable application by the US economic sanctions provided for in the magnitsky law against a member of the national judiciary represents a serious and unacceptable attack on our country’s sovereignty.

Thus, I manifest my integral solidarity with Minister Alexandre de Moraes in the face of measures that undermine the authority and independence of our institutions.

The existence of independent justice is an essential pillar of any democracy and we Brazilians will never admit to suffer political harassment against those who fulfill their constitutional duty here.

We will not bend to illegitimate pressures that try to tarnish honor and reduce the greatness of our sovereign nation.

In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that all appropriate measures, which are the responsibility of the Brazilian State to safeguard its sovereignty and institutions, especially in relation to the autonomy of its judiciary, will be adopted in a thoughtful and conscious manner in the proper forums and moments.

Sovereignty is not negotiated! ”
