The governments of Thailand and Cambodia agreed with a “immediate and unconditional” ceasefire from midnight on Monday (28), after five days of border clashes that left dozens of dead and injured, and caused mass displacement of people residing in the affected region-291,000 capping.
The agreement, confirmed on Monday after pressure from US President Donald Trump on Saturday (26), was also appealing from China, which added to the observer in conversations.
Trump contacted the leaders of both countries over the weekend, threatening them with the suspension of tariff negotiations.
“I just had a very good talk with Cambodia Prime Minister [Hun Manet] And I informed him about my discussions with Thailand and his interim prime Minister [Phumtham Wechayachai]. Both countries are seeking a ceasefire and immediate peace. They also want to return to the ‘commercial negotiation table’ with the US, which we consider inappropriate until the fighting stops. Thailand and Cambodia will formalize the end of the conflict in at least two bilateral meetings, starting with one on Tuesday (29), held between military chiefs and another scheduled for August 4.
Cambodia’s premie, Hun Manet, highlighted Trump’s mediation in the agreement, thanking him for the intervention. At the meeting on Monday, the US and China ambassadors in Malaysia, Edgard D. Kagan and Ouyang Yujing, respectively.
