The attack was carried out by soldiers from the Ukrainian unit “Raid”which specializes in unmanned systems. According to one Video published on Telegram of the unit itself, the target was hit by a remote controlled attack drone.
The footage shows the moment when the UAV hits one of the system’s rockets, leading to an unintended firing that pierces the vehicle’s cabin. After that, a fire and a catastrophic explosion arise, which completely destroys the equipment.

First Confirmation in Fight
According to the military, the operation took place in the direction of Novopavlivka. This is the first time that an M1991 – a weapon originally from North Korea – has been destroyed in the fight by Ukrainian forces. The model’s presence among Russian troops was first confirmed in april 2025after publishing videos from Russian military channels.
What is M1991?
M1991 MLRS is a 240mm rocket throwing developed by North Korea in the late 1980s as an attempt to emulate the Soviet BM-27 wrapped-system. The system has 22 rockets and was originally mounted on the Chinese truck chassis CQ25290. The standard crew consists of two operators, a driver and a commander.
The normal range of the M1991 rockets is 60 kilometerbut upgrades published in 2024 suggest a possible range of up to 80 kilometer.
The destruction of this system marks an important milestone in the use of drones on the battlefield and demonstrates Ukraine’s growing ability to neutralize strategic weapons of foreign origin.
