Video: Russian experimental prototype with updated aircraft body and PD-8 engines take off towards certification

The latest version of the Russian regional jet aircraft Superjet 100, equipped exclusively with components produced nationally, has arrived at the airport to the MM Gromov Flight Research Institute in the Zhukovsky to start the Test Program for Air certification.

The experimental prototype, with number 97003, is dedicated to Yuri Ivashechkin, the first chief designer of the SSJ-100, and conducted a long-distance transport flight from Komsomolian-on-Amur. The journey of about 6,000 kilometers included technical stops at the airports in Irkutsk and Novosibirsk.

The flight crew consisted of test pilots Dmitry Demenev, Alexander Verkhov and Igor Grevtsev, as well as floating test engineer Maxim Grukanov. The flight lasted for about 9 hours, reached heights of up to 12,000 meters and a marching speed of Mach 0.78.

“The flight was carried out in accordance with the standard profile of the base air vessel, and all systems on board worked as expected. The stopover was successfully carried out at large airports, showing the aircraft’s high readiness,” Demenev said.

After arriving at Zhukovsky, Superjet was transferred to Yakovlev’s technical complex, where it will be prepared for the certification test program. The next phases will include flights under typical operating conditions, focusing on verifying performance and reliability.

The national version of Superjet had its virgin flight on April 23, 2025. This is the third prototype included in the certification program.

The development of the jet is part of Russia’s import substitution initiative in aviation. All foreign systems and components have been replaced with national options, including motors (now PD-8 from UEC), auxiliary motors, avionics, landing equipment, electrical systems, air conditioning, airline systems, fire protection and more.

In addition, the aircraft body is modified to simplify production and maintenance processes, which contributes to increased industrial efficiency.

Chief designer Kirill Kuznetsov stated that the Russian -produced systems worked reliably during the flight, adding that the upcoming tests will focus on verifying performance under different operating conditions.
