The target of the shooting was an unmanned vessel located approximately 40 kilometers from the southern coast of the island. The launch is part of a series of military demonstrations aimed at reinforcing the country’s defensive readiness in the face of China’s growing naval protagonism in the region.

According to Japanese defense authorities, the type 88 missile is considered a key piece in the detachment effort against possible raids of the Popular Liberation Army Navy (ELP) around the Japanese archipelago.

Expansion of Japanese offensive capacity

Exercise occurs amid the plan for modernization of Japan’s long -term attack capabilities. The Japanese government intends to start later this year the implementation of Tomahawk cruise missiles acquired from the United States as part of its new active defense strategy.

In addition, Tokyo is conducting tests with the new Type 12 Long -range anti -envision missile, an enhanced version of type 88, extended to up to 1,000 km – ten times higher than the current model. The new generation of missiles should allow Japan to reach targets at great distances and more accurately, expanding its response ability to potential naval threats.

The growing militarization in the Western Pacific has been intensifying the regional arms race with Japan, China and other Asian countries investing heavily in missile, surveillance and air defense technologies.
