Shiou Deng, a veteran with almost 30 years of service in the Los Angeles Police Department, died night to Monday (23) while examining an accident on the highway 405.
The 53 -year -old policeman was married and had turned on the emergency lights when he was hit from behind by a car driving near the scene of the accident.
“He was driven to the Ucla Medical Center, and despite the brave effort attempts, he did not survive,” said Police Chief Jim McDonnell.
“He died as a hero. He was there to take care of others and put their safety ahead of his own. He wants to be an inspiration to all of us while continuing the mission, ”McDonnell said.
The driver of the van that the veteran had stopped to help also perished in the collision. Another person was taken to hospital for the treatment of injuries.
Shiou Deng was described as an “exceptional guy” and a “real leader” who served his society for over 26 years of “honor, courage and compassion.”
Two years ago, the veteran was promoted to Sergeant and spent 17 years in a unit for emotional assessment.
“This is a sad day for our city,” said Mayor Karen Bass, who ordered flags on public buildings hoisted on half bar.
