Shiou Deng, a veteran with nearly 30 years of service at Los Angeles Police Department, died Monday night (23.) While investigating an accident on highway 405.

The 53-year-old officer was married and had turned on his emergency flashes when he was hit from behind by a car driving close to the scene of the accident.

“He was driven to the UCLA Medical Center, and despite heroic efforts he did not survive,” said Police Chief Jim McDonnell.

“He died like a hero. He was there to help others and put their security over his own. He will be an inspiration to all of us as we continue our mission,” McDonnell said.

The driver of the van that the veteran stopped to help also died in the clash. Another person was taken to the hospital for the treatment of injuries.

Shiou Deng was described as an “extraordinary guy” and a “real leader” who served his community for over 26 years of “honor, courage and compassion.”

Two years ago, the veteran was promoted to sergeant and spent 17 years in a unit for emotional assessment.

“This is a sad day for our city,” said Mayor Karen Bass, who ordered flags on public buildings to be hoisted on half bar.
