The United States Department of Justice, under the leadership of the Donald Trump government, filed a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles (California), Mayor Democrat Karen Bass and the Municipal Council, directly responsible for the policies of “Sanctuary City” – including illegal, the wave of violence, withdrawals and attacks on police registered.
The measure is part of the federal offensive to face local governments that refuse to collaborate with immigration authorities.
In the process, the Trump government claims that the policies of Los Angeles, which the White House considers as illegal to national laws, make it difficult to comply with the migratory norms currently in force and stimulate the disorder environment. According to the head of the Justice Department, Pamela Bondi, “the policies of (city) sanctuary were the main cause of violence, chaos and attacks on security forces that Americans saw in Los Angeles.”
According to the Justice Department, the city’s refusal to collaborate with federal agents forced the government to trigger California National Guard and Marines to contain the disorders.
“Jurisdictions such as those of Los Angeles, who ignore federal law and prioritize illegal immigrants over American citizens, undermine security at all levels,” said Bondi. “This ends under President Trump,” he added.
Attorney Bill Essayli of California Central District stressed that the US Constitution prohibits states and cities to choose which federal laws will comply. For him, municipal policies have been facilitating that in an irregular situation escape from the law, contributing to insecurity and crime.
“The process will hold Los Angeles responsible for deliberately obstructing the application of federal immigration legislation,” he said.
The action against Los Angeles is part of a series of processes opened by the Trump administration against cities that have similar measures to Los Angeles. The goal, according to the Justice Department, is to ensure compliance with federal immigration laws throughout the US territory.
